The sitting position

Keeping the spine straight

The first thing you need to do with meditation is to be seated in the correct position. Some people will know a posture, also called an asana, such as padma (Sanskrit for "lotus"), which they can adopt if they so choose, but this is not necessary. You can do all the exercises in this book seated on a hard-backed wooden chair. Make sure your spine is straight, but at the same time try to keep the body as relaxed as possible. Place the palms facing downwards on the knees with the fingers slightly out-stretched and rest the head back a little on the neck. If you find that there is tension in your shoulders, as you probably will after a busy day, you can loosen them up by rolling them around a bit. When you have done this try to become completely still. Ideally your body should be as physically clean as possible when you meditate, and you should also wear clean clothes - preferably ones you don't normally wear when you go out. |
