    Sushumna, Ida and Pingala

From a metaphysical point of view, the spine is the centre of our being. The major psychic centres, or chakras are connected to it. At its bottom, in the Base of the Spine Chakra resides the power of kundalini.

In the middle of the spine is a tiny channel, through which kundalini will rise, when it eventually does so. Down the sides of the spine are two other 'nadis' or psychic channels, known as Ida and Pingala. Pingala goes from the right nostril and carries energy which is hot, energetic and positive. Ida goes from the left and carries energy which is cool, relaxed and negative. These two channels are often depicted as intertwining on their journey down the spine (forming a "caduceus"), before meeting the Base of the Spine Chakra on the sides at which they began.

The properties of these nadis explains why having a blocked nostril produces different effects, depending which side of the body it is on. For harmony one should ensure that there is a balanced flow of energy through both nostrils.
